Verda announces new AI Data Center in Sweden

Verda is establishing a next-generation AI infrastructure hub in Sundsvall, Sweden. This marks one of the largest AI infrastructure initiatives in the Nordic region and a defining step in strengthening Europe’s technological future.

The project will support the development of an AI data center designed to deliver high-performance compute capacity, advanced research capabilities, and sustainable infrastructure built for long-term growth.

This initiative reflects Verda’s ambition to build world-class AI infrastructure in Europe and to enable the next wave of innovation across research, industry, and emerging technology sectors.

"AI is becoming foundational to every industry and infrastructure is what makes that transformation possible. With Sundsvall, we are building more than capacity. We are creating the foundation for a new generation of AI innovation in Europe, powered by sustainable energy and a strong regional ecosystem." - Ruben Bryon, Founder & CEO at Verda

Why Sundsvall

Sundsvall and the wider Västernorrland county offer a unique combination of strengths:

  • Abundant access to 100% renewable energy
  • Robust digital infrastructure and fiber connectivity
  • A growing innovation ecosystem supported by academia and industry

This foundation makes Sundsvall an ideal location for building infrastructure that meets the rapidly growing demand for AI training and inference capacity across Europe.

Building a Nordic AI Ecosystem

Beyond the construction of the data center itself, Verda is exploring ways to help strengthen the broader Nordic AI ecosystem around Sundsvall.

These discussions include several potential initiatives aimed at positioning the region as a long-term hub for advanced AI infrastructure and research:

  • Establishing Sundsvall as a Nordic hub for next-generation AI systems: future GPU architectures such as NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra and upcoming Vera Rubin
  • Exploring heat recovery solutions, similar to implementations already operating in Finland, allowing data center heat to be reused for district heating and local energy systems
  • Developing closer collaboration with Mid Sweden University with potential opportunities for research partnerships, curriculum integration, and talent development
  • Strengthening the region’s leadership in renewable-energy-powered AI infrastructure
  • Supporting the creation of high-skill jobs and contributing to the long-term growth of the Nordic AI ecosystem

Europe's AI future must be built on European infrastructure. This is a major step toward a sovereign AI cloud. Designed and operated in Europe, for the whole world. We are building the foundation that gives companies and institutions control over the compute that powers their innovation.” - Jorge Santos, COO at Verda.

Sustainability at scale

Energy efficiency and sustainability are core to Verda’s strategy.

The Sundsvall AI data center will leverage Sweden’s renewable energy resources and favorable climate conditions to operate highly efficient large-scale compute infrastructure. By combining renewable energy with modern cooling technologies and potential heat recovery systems, the facility aims to deliver high-performance computing with a significantly reduced environmental footprint.

This approach aligns with Verda’s broader goal of ensuring that the rapid growth of AI infrastructure is supported by responsible and sustainable energy practices.

Looking Forward

AI is reshaping industries, governments, and societies. Infrastructure is the foundation that makes this transformation possible.

The Sundsvall project represents an important step toward creating a sovereign European AI cloud, enabling companies, researchers, and institutions to access world-class AI compute infrastructure built in Europe.

This is not simply an expansion. It is the development of long-term infrastructure that supports innovation, strengthens technological independence, and helps position the Nordic region as a global center for AI.
